Do you have Teenagers? This is how Martial Arts can impact their life.

Teenagers, Martial Arts, & How it works

The challenges of teen life can be ALOT for a developing mind to handle. It’s not just about playing sports and going to their friend’s birthday party on the weekend anymore. The social pressures, the prep work to get ready for a college mind set, and the opportunities to make adult decisions with the results of adult consequences, is no easy task! No wonder they can be cranky, emotional, & high strung!

So how does the martial arts world help?

Here is a story of a 13 year old who entered the martial arts academy, arguing with their parent about how they didn’t want to do martial arts, nor anything else for that matter…

They had no idea what path is in front of them. The parent, knowing martial arts had great development in core life values, like teaching them how to have self control over the emotions, self discipline to do what needs to get done, having goals and a direction, how to have confidence in their choices, and how to respect themselves and others, pushed the teenager on to go ahead and get started.

The teen, being a teenager, of course trying to prove themselves, argues… and debates… and tries to negotiate for the first couple of weeks of their classes on how they do not want to do martial arts. With some very awesome instructors, the teenager has fun in class, they learn some cool things, and make new friends.

But… since they are trying to prove a point… they wouldn’t let the parent know that. So a few months go by and the opportunity comes to switch to another sport. The parent was shocked by the response after all the resistance from the start, “No thanks, I think I kinda like Karate, its pretty cool.” The REAL cool part of it all, during the beginning, the teenagers grades started to improve. Their attitude was actually more positive. The talks of a college direction randomly would show up. After this moment, the teenager set the goal to black belt, learned to set big goals at a young age, made the choice of never be involved in dangerous or negative social situations and stick to it, all without the parent having to be there.

The hardest part of parenting a teen is to know what is BEST for your child and giving them the chance to find what’s best for them. It is a tough line to walk. Sometimes, a little “parents knows best guidance” goes a long way. Sometimes you can let them make their own mistakes and learn.

The crazy part is most of our teens start class and have fun from day one, we usually don’t get the resistance of the teenager above. What’s awesome about this is, no matter the teen that walks in, is the difference that we see in them while training. Their confidence, their drive, their respect, and all other TX Black Belt Academy qualities.
